Satellite Beach is a coastal community vulnerable to hurricanes, tropical storms, storm surge, flooding, high winds, tornadoes and beach erosion. Residents should prepare before a storm approaches and follow instructions from the City of Satellite Beach and Brevard County Emergency Management.
Emergency Alerts
Residents should sign up for AlertBrevard, Brevard County’s emergency notification system. It can send emergency information by phone, text and email, including severe-weather watches and warnings.
You can also:
Text BREVARDEOC to 888777 for Brevard County emergency alerts.
During an emergency, call 2-1-1 for current information about evacuation routes, shelters, sandbags and disaster assistance.

Hurricane Season
Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with the busiest period generally occurring from mid-August through mid-October.
Know Your Evacuation Zone
Residents should determine their official hurricane evacuation zone before a storm threatens the area. Evacuation zones are related primarily to storm-surge risk and are different from FEMA flood-insurance zones. Follow Brevard County evacuation orders rather than deciding whether to evacuate based only on a hurricane’s category.
Hurricane Shelters
Brevard County announces which shelters will open when an emergency occurs.
Current Shelters & Evacuation Information
Special Needs Shelters
Residents who require assistance because of medical conditions or dependence on equipment such as oxygen or electricity should consider registering in advance with Brevard County’s Special Needs Shelter program. Registration can be made through Emergency Management, including by calling 321-637-6670. Registration information should be kept current annually.
Transportation to designated shelters can also be arranged for eligible residents who register for transportation assistance.
Pets
Residents evacuating with pets should have a pet emergency kit containing vaccination records, identification, medications, food, leash/collar and an appropriate crate or carrier.
Because pet arrangements vary between shelters and Special Needs shelters have different procedures, residents should check the current Brevard County shelter information before leaving home.
Prepare a Hurricane Kit
Florida Emergency Management recommends preparing for approximately seven days without normal services.
Useful supplies include water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, weather radio, phone chargers/power banks, first-aid supplies, hygiene products, important documents and cash.
Prepare Your Home
Before a storm, residents should secure outdoor furniture and loose objects, protect windows and doors, inspect roof and garage-door protection, charge phones and batteries, and make plans before evacuation traffic begins. Florida Emergency Management identifies the roof, roof-to-wall connections/straps, windows, doors and garage doors as particularly important areas for wind protection.
Flooding & Storm Surge
Satellite Beach can experience flooding from storm surge, hurricanes, heavy rainfall and unusually high tides. Residents can check their property’s FEMA flood zone and should remember that homeowners insurance generally does not cover flood damage.

During a Storm
Residents should remain indoors and away from windows, continue monitoring official emergency information, and never go outside simply because conditions temporarily become calm. If an evacuation order is issued, leave promptly.
After the Storm
Wait for officials to say it is safe before returning to an evacuated area. Avoid floodwaters, downed power lines and damaged structures.
Satellite Beach also has a post-disaster permitting procedure designed to expedite permits and inspections for storm-related repairs after a declared emergency.
